For this family of 6+ in Park Slope, BK, it was obvious from their story that the rear yard was the focal point for all gatherings, large and small.  With  four  kids fully grown and living out of the house, the homeowners desired an improved space that would draw the family back together for all occasions.
Removal of what once was, 30 years of family stories in one space,  was only viable if what was to come could continue their tradition of gathering and growing community. Entrusting us with this mission, we set out to design the space, despite its limited size, to feel ever expansive. Distinct, though not divided, sections, give space and opportunity for multiple conversations, when needed, or just one when desired.  An upper deck made of Ipe, framed with steel, looks over a yard  of blue stone and cedar elements which have been shou-suji-ban’d to warm its hue and extend its life.
Happy with the result, I have had the honor to provide such additions as a custom dining table made of Ipe, with a base of a recycled sewing machine base, provided by the matriarch, as well as a curvilinear, organic counter made of cement and tile, to hold their pizza oven.
